" We don't want to die " - 2021
While more than one woman is killed every day in Turkey (474 femicides in 2019), the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has decided to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention in March 2021 - an international treaty aimed at protecting and combating violence against women. One of the main slogans chanted by feminists in Turkey is "Femicides are political". They denounce this politicization by insisting on the fact that the murderers are protected by the justice system, that the government criminalizes women's struggle, that the requests for protection orders are not respected, that violence is banalized and above all that this climate of impunity encourages other men to commit violence against women. The families of the victims face a double injustice; the loss of their loved one and having to fight to gain justice. Nevertheless, these families do everything to ensure that the memory of their daughter, their mother or their sister is not forgotten, and most importantly, that no one else will ever have to go through the same suffering.
