The International Women's day in Turkey

Istanbul, March 8 2017 - In Turkey, the International Women's day was characterized by being highly politicized this year because of the referendum that will take place on the 16th of April. Thousands of women walked in the popular Istiklal Street to defend their rights, but over all to shout loudly "HAYIR (no)" in opposition to the constitutional reform planned by the government. Those women saw in this march an opportunity to resist against the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who wants to establish a presidential regime in Turkey.

"We know the problem we are facing now because of our government. We know their point of views (women are not equal to men, women should stay home and have 3 children, can't wear what they want, cannot laugh in public, women shouldn't have an abortion, the unity of family is more important than the protection of the women, etc). We know that if you give them the power to do what they want, we know that everything gonna get worst. The only chance we can stop them is the referundum. That's why women's march cannot be separated from politics in Turkey", said Nisan, a feminist of 22 years old and member of the organization Yeryüzü
